Summer in the Queen City can be brutal given the recent stifling temperatures and unbearable humidity. Don’t let that get you down, though. With a little creativity, it’s not hard to make this Charlotte’s coolest summer on record. Check out these tips on how to beat the heat and stay cool in Charlotte this summer:
1. Have a staycation.
Staying at home doesn’t have to be boring. With the right recipes and attitude, you can turn a day at home into a day so cool that everyone will be jealous. Blend up some smoothies or a delicious cocktail, put on some music that’s perfect for summertime, and have some friends over for a fun and relaxing time. Who said a staycation couldn’t be amazing?
2. The US National Whitewater Center.
A mere 20 minutes from Uptown, the USNWC offers world class whitewater rafting and kayaking, as well as climbing and other outdoor activities. We recommend a guided rafting tour to escape the heat, though. Getting splashed with the cool water is an awesome way to spend the day. Don’t skip the sunscreen, though!
3. Get out of town for the day.
Take a weekend getaway to see everything that the High Country has to offer, from Grandfather Mountain to downtown Blowing Rock, or get in touch with your funky side in Asheville. Or you can opt to stay closer to home and take a day trip to some of the attractions closer to Charlotte. Check out Lazy Five Ranch in Mooresville, where you can take a driving safari from the comfort of your (air-conditioned!) car to see exotic animals, from zebras to giraffes to ostriches.
4. See a movie.
There are a plethora of excellent movies out this summer, from Inside Out to Jurassic World to Spy. No matter what your tastes in genre might be, there is a summer blockbuster out there to keep you glued to the screen. The fact that movie theaters are so air-conditioned they may turn your lips blue is just an added bonus.
It’s not often that you get the thrill of climbing 325 feet and then dropping 320 in the blink of an eye. At Carowinds, locally known as the the Cedar Point of the southeast, thrills come in all sizes. From the Hurler to the Drop Zone, intimidation is sure to be in your vocabulary. Or if you feel like playing nice, getting wet and wild or treating the family to a weekend adventure, Carowinds has got an assortment of attractions for you. Open all summer!
